How to deal with plant diseases and pests without the use of agrochemicals?

The training for farmers and land users, which took place on August 27-28 in the Boboisurkhan village, was dedicated to the fight against plant diseases and pests without agrochemicals. This village is located in the Gissar ridge; its inhabitants are mainly engaged in viticulture and vegetable growing. In recent years they experience difficulties associated with outbreaks of diseases, plant pests, which residents associate with climatic changes - more frequent heatwaves and droughts.

Safe way for humans to control plant pests

One of the eco-friendly and safe ways to combat plant pests is to use disinfecting plants' properties and introduce herbal preparations - phyto-pesticides. Their advantage is the absence of a harmful effect on the soil and cultivated plants with sufficiently high toxicity in insect pests. Phyto-pesticides are mainly made from plants, including stalks of potatoes, onions, or tomatoes, and extracts from garlic, pepper, dandelion, wormwood, and datura. Other biological pesticides can be produced using ash or soap.

The technology has significant environmental benefits. This technology is not expensive so considerable economic benefits will be apparent as well. The costs are mainly related to the collection and drying of plants. By choosing phyto-pesticide technologies for pest control, farmers would increase plant resilience and make their products more environmentally friendly.

Training on the implementation and dissemination of available technologies for adaptation to climate change at the local level is carried out within the framework of the project of the Regional Environmental Center for Central Asia "Climate Adaptation and Mitigation Program for Aral Sea Basin" (CAMP4ASB).
