On the 5th of June 2020, in honour of World Environment Day, investors, activists, and corporations jointly launched the global campaign "Race to Zero". Today we will touch upon the sustainable campaign’s objectives as well as share how to become its participant or partner.
The COP26 negotiations, which were scheduled from the 9th to 19th of November 2020 in the Scottish city Glasgow, were postponed to the to the period from the 1st to the 12th of Novemeber due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Alok Sharma, UK Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy and COP26 President, said: “The way we rebuild the economy after the Covid-19 pandemic will have a major impact on our planet. Investments insustainable development will enable us to change everything for the better.” For this reason, the campaigns for sustainable development are continuing their activities and strive to provide a carbon-free future for the whole world.
To avoid the catastrophic effects of climate change, emissions reductions should be more radical than they were considered by the 2015 Paris Agreement. In this regard, large-scale energy reform is required.
“Race to Zero” is a campaign aimed at ensuring a healthy, sustainable net-zero carbon future. The main objective of the campaign is to give an impetus to the transition to a carbon-free economy in anticipation of the negotiations of COP26, where governments of the world shouldincrease their contribution to the Paris Agreement.
“Race to Zero” includes 449 cities, 21 regions, 992 enterprises, 38 investors and 505 universities. By uniting initiatives, the campaign brings together 120 countries. All “Race to Zero” members are striving to switch to a fully carbon-free power system by 2050. The campaign currently covers approximately 25% of global CO2 emissions and more than 50% of GDP.
• Initiatives and networks can join the campaign on the condition that they meet the minimum requirements listed here (information is provided in English). For more information contact: RaceToZero@unfccc.int
