Awarding winners of Central Asian competition for local adaptation technologies and practices

A solemn ceremony of awarding diplomas and memorable prizes to the winners of the Central Asian competition of local adaptation technologies and practices was held in the Garden Hotel, in Bishkek, on September 14, 2020. The ceremony was organized by the Regional Environmental Center for Central Asia, the Central Asian Climate Network of NGOs within the World Bank project “Climate Adaptation and Mitigation Program for Aral Sea basin (CAMP4ASB)”. The regional competition itself was held from September 15, 2019, to May 1, 2020.

The first place in the nomination "Best practices of climate-sustainable land management (including pasture use and forest management)" was awarded to A. Chalov and the Kelechek-Ak-Tektir jamaat of Ak-Tektir village, Toktogul district, Jalal-Abad region, Kyrgyz Republic, for the project "Development 16 hectares of dry land in the village of Ak-Tektir. Zhamaat was established in 2018, and now it includes 125 people from 25 families. As a part of their initiative, members of the jamaat rented territories on the Kuldake site, completely ennobled it, thereby contributing to the restoration of the local ecosystem and economic prosperity. On behalf of the jamaat, A. Chalov expressed gratitude to the organizers of the competition and the commission. “Such initiatives stimulate us for further actions, and we are also building new bridges. Particularly, today, when we met new people, exchanged contacts and even discussed the possibility of joint initiatives soon”,- A. Chalov said. According to the chairman of the Green Alliance N. Abdyrasulova, the initiative of the Kelechek-Ak-Tektir jamaat is an excellent example of local adaptation technologies and practices. “We are very proud that Kyrgyzstan won two prizes at the regional competition this year, and it is very gratifying that the joint efforts of local residents make a huge contribution to the restoration and protection of local ecosystems, as well as to the sustainable development of our country”,- N Abdyrasulova.

The second place in the nomination "Best practices for climate-sustainable use of water resources" was awarded to K. Moldarynov from Naryn, Kyrgyz Republic, for the project "Supply of piped water to places that lack irrigation water." As a part of the initiative, to remote and undeveloped areas in the village, Zherge-Tal, Naryn region, Naryn region, water will be supplied through water supply networks, and gardens will be laid out on these sites. In this area, where the rural population is more engaged in animal husbandry and field cultivation, gardening is another activity that will not only create new jobs, but also make organic fruits grown in local orchards available for local consumption. K. Moldarynov also emphasized that participation in the competition allowed him to talk about “small” local initiatives at “large” national and regional levels.

A member of the CAREC in Kyrgyzstan K. Moldoshev, President of Unison Group and Chairman of the Green Alliance N. Abdyrasulova, head of the Association of Forest Users and Land Users of Kyrgyzstan A. Burkhanov, Director of CAREC in Kyrgyzstan M. Seyitkassymov, and the team of the branch took part in the awards ceremony.
