Announcement of the Regional Consultation Workshop “Towards a Strategic Guidance on Climate Change and Adaptation in the Central Asian Mountain Regions”

9 April 2018

24-25 April 2018 in Almaty, Kazakhstan (exact time and venue to be announced)

Dear Colleagues,

Impacts of climate change put the highly fragile mountain ecosystems of Central Asia and important ecosystem services they provide to people living down and upstream under increasing pressure. Therefore, the United Nations Environment Programme (UN Environment) through its project “Climate Change Action in Developing Countries with Fragile Mountainous Ecosystems from a Sub-regional perspective” and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH (German Federal Enterprise for International Cooperation) in the framework of its regional project “Ecosystem-based Adaptation (EbA) to Climate Change in High Mountainous Regions of Central Asia“ are jointly supporting the Central Asian mountain countries in adapting to the effects of climate change by facilitating the regional dialogue and the elaboration of the “Strategic Guidance on Climate Change and Adaptation in the Central Asia Mountain Regions”. The Strategic Guidance builds on the results of the above projects including key findings and recommendations of the UN Environment “Outlook on Climate Change Adaptation in the Central Asian Mountains”, as well as relevant formal planning tools for climate change action adopted by the Central Asian countries.

In this context and in the context of the forthcoming World Mountain Forum that is planned to be held in autumn 2018 in Central Asia, UN Environment, GIZ and the Regional Mountain Centre for Central Asia (RMCCA) cordially invite you to take part and actively contribute to the regional consultation workshop  “Towards a Strategic Guidance on Climate Change and Adaptation in the Central Asian Mountain Regions” to be held on 24-25 April 2018 in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

The main objective of the workshop is to review and discuss the prepared draft Strategic Guidance and received inputs from the designated governmental experts and other stakeholders as well as to discuss possible follow-up initiatives such as the elaboration of an Action Plan on Climate Change Adaptation in the Mountainous Regions of Central Asia.

Back to back to the regional consultation workshop, a meeting on 25 April 2018 will be organized to present and discuss the first results of the national processes for the renewal of the REAP.

The logistical information and the prepared draft Strategic Guidance will be shared with you ahead of the workshop.

We would kindly ask you to confirm your participation to Larisa Semernya (Larisa.Semernya@un.org) by 2 April 2018 and Olzhas Atymtayev (Olzhas.Atymtayev@un.org).
