The region of Central Asia is one of the most vulnerable to climate change impacts. Intensive melting of mountain glaciers, growing frequency of natural disasters and droughts are amongst just a few indicators of climate-related risks, which can bring irreversible damage to economic stability and food security in the region.
Steps towards climate resilience are expected to be discussed at the Central Asia Climate Change Conference (CACCC 2019), which will be held on 3-4 of April 2019 in Tashkent. CACCC 2019 will bring together more than 200 participants and speakers from leading national, regional and international organizations and agencies. The conference is a continuation of the World Bank’s initiative for climate change knowledge and information exchange in Central Asia and is organized under the framework of CAMP4ASB project. CACCC 2019 is funded by the World Bank and supported by Executive Committee of the International Fund for saving the Aral Sea (EC IFAS), Uzhydromet and the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC).
The main objective of the conference is to promote decision-making process on climate adaptation and mitigation in Central Asia. The IPCC recent report (2018) states that the consequences of global warming even by 1.5°C will be far dramatic than expected, and will require substantial mitigation and adaptation efforts from the international community. The conference will, therefore, present the most updated information about climate change impacts, including recent research findings. The participants will be able to discuss needed joint measures to avoid worst impacts on ecosystems, built environment, human health, and well-being.
Particular attention of CACCC 2019 will be given to global and national policy, climate services, capacity building, technology transfer and climate finance. The Outcome Document in the format of a Call for Actions is expected to contain practical recommendations for the countries of Central Asia to step forward on climate adaptation measures and strengthen a multi-country partnership in climate policy.
The previous CACCC-2018 was organized on January 24-25, 2018 in Almaty, Kazakhstan, and resulted in joint collaborative actions of many stakeholders. The findings of the previous conference were elaborated into key messages and formulated the thematic content of the CACCC 2019 programme.
