June 5 - World Environment Day

Annually on June 5 we celebrate the World Environment Day, established by the UN General Assembly in 1972. Congratulations to all of you!

Recent events, such as wildfires in Australia or the global pandemic, proved the direct relationship between humans and nature. Nature continues to send us signals. However, to be able to correctly interpret these signals, we need to know what changes are occurring in the environment, and what consequences they can bring.

For example, just the other day an accident was announced at a thermal power plant in Norilsk, which resulted in the spill of 20,000 tons of oil.

Central Asia is one of the regions which is most vulnerable to climate change. The region is already experiencing abnormal temperature rise, glaciers’ melting and a reduction in water resources. But to know how to solve a problem, you must have reliable information. Fortunately, in recent years, information on environmental issues in general and climate change issues, in particular, has become more and more accessible to the general public. A lot of work is being done within the framework of our project - “Climate Adaptation and Mitigation Program for the Aral Sea Basin (CAMP4ASB)”.

To raise awareness on climate change issues, the development of the Central Asian Climate Information Platform (CACIP) was initiated. The platform aims to make climate change information in Central Asia more accessible. It will help stakeholders to have access, analyze and visualize publicly available data to support their awareness-raising activities, as well as assessment and decision-making procedures.

You can find more information about the Central Asian Climate Information Platform by clicking on the link.

Already today CACIP provides access to more than 11 thousand documents. Information is available in 7 languages: English, Russian, Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Tajik, Turkmen and Uzbek.

For further development of the platform, consultations are held with stakeholders in the countries of Central Asia and on this basis, adjustments are made to plans for the promotion and implementation of the information resource.

In the meantime, we invite you to familiarize yourself with the newsletters in which we talk about the main functions that will be available very soon within the framework of CACIP.

Once again, congratulations to all of you on Environment Day! Follow our updates and remember: caring for the environment is our common concern.
