Climate Math by McKinsey
Perhaps the main result that the international community is considering in the area of climate change is to achieve the goal of keeping the temperature rise below 1.5 degrees. We should just remember that absolutely everything is in our hands. However, for such a serious and comprehensive problem as climate change, there is no simple solution. That is why it is necessary to approach the issue very carefully and to weigh all the related risks.

To resolve this issue and provide us with the necessary analytical base for further decision-making, McKinsey & Company prepared a report entitled “Climate math: What a 1.5-degree pathway would take”. In this report, experts offer a detailed assessment of greenhouse gas emissions by sector and possible scenarios for their reduction. Researchers base their calculations on the forecasts of the 5th Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

Unfortunately, in their conclusions, McKinsey experts conclude that achieving the goal of keeping the level of temperature increase within 1.5 degrees is possible only on the condition that we begin to act radically and right now. First of all, it should be said that to achieve the goal of 1.5 degrees, the entire economy must embark on a carbon-free path of development.

Among the main changes, researchers distinguish the following measures:

• Revision of our consumer and agricultural habits;
• Electrification of transport and households;
• Introduction of adaptation measures in industrial processes;
• Decarbonization of power and fuel;
• Strengthening carbon capture and sequestration technologies.

In other words, serious changes must occur in absolutely all areas of our lives. Each of us individually needs to rethink our daily habits, including what we eat and how we move. To receive more detailed information, we suggest that you familiarize yourself with the original McKinsey report available in English - here.
