Young activists organized virtual climate change negotiations

As we all know, the major climate change event - COP26 - has been postponed until November 21, 2021, due to the coronavirus pandemic. In this regard, young activists from all over the world decided to organize a virtual COP26. Given that such a format does not require participants' physical presence, it is assumed that the amount of greenhouse gas emissions will be reduced by 1,500 times compared to the last year.

The unusual negotiations began yesterday, December 1, 2020, and are attended by over 350 representatives from 150 countries.

As one of the co-organizers of the event, Dom Jaramillo from Ecuador, commented: "We want to raise ambitions and show world leaders how a COP should be run. We are not the leaders of the future. We are the leaders of today." In other words, the main challenge for young activists is to ensure that their views are taken into account by the decision-makers.

Among other things, young people also strive to make the developing countries heard because they are often the most vulnerable face to climate change consequences. For example, Dom Jaramillo herself is from Ecuador. So for her, climate change is not just an abstract term. It is a reality that she witnessed herself, living on a banana plantation in Ecuador.

Therefore, young activists hope that they will show the world leaders that they also have a voice and want it to be heard thanks to this event. Climate change is a problem that affects each of us.
