A training course on the implementation of the “Synoptik-Dolgosrocnik” software package has been launched
On June 8, 2020, a training course on the implementation of a software package for long-term meteorological forecasting into operational practice among Turkmehydromet employees was successfully launched.

The training course is part of a capacity-building program implemented by the Regional Environmental Center for Central Asia as part of the “Climate Adaptation and Mitigation Program for the Aral sea basin” (CAMP4ASB) funded by the World Bank.

The course is given by Valery Yuryevich Tsepelev, Ph.D. in Geography, Head of the Federal State Budgetary Institution North-West Administration for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring of Roshydromet.

You can read the interview with Valery Yuryevich Tsepelev here. In this interview you will learn why making long-term forecasts is more difficult than short-term forecasts; how the idea of creating the “Synoptic-Dolgosrochnik” program was born and what are its advantages; and what are the main results of the implementation of the program in Kazakhstan.

“The main advantage of this software is the formalization of compiling a weather forecast for a month, which has always been compiled by a team of a dozen forecasters. Those works that were previously carried out manually by 4-5 people are now carried out by one person”, - Valery Yuryevich Tsepelev.

To optimize the work of hydrometeorological services, as well as to improve the quality of forecasts in the Central Asian region, especially in a changing climate, CAREC will conduct these training courses as part of the CAMP4ASB program.

As part of the first day, the participants were introduced to the interface of the “Synoptic-Dolgosrochnik” Program software package and also learned how to update the databases. In total, the event will last 5 days, from June 8 to 12, 2020. The participants will learn how to develop monthly forecasts based on synoptic-statistical methods, update databases from various sources, analyze unjustified forecasts, evaluate the quality of weather forecasts, and also develop monthly forecasts based on the ensemble forecasting method.

In the future, CAREC plans to conduct similar training courses among representatives of hydrometeorological centers of all Central Asian countries.
