Central Asia Climate Information Platform Officially Launched

On May 26, the Central Asia Climate Information Platform was officially launched for the first time.

“We hope that the Central Asia Climate Information Platform (CACIP) will become a knowledge hub on which adaptation and mitigation strategies and programmes for climate change in Central Asia will be developed,” said the Executive Director of the Regional Environmental Center for Central Asia (CAREC) Zafar Makhmudov at the online CACIP launch ceremony.

The CACIP was developed by the International Center for Agricultural Research in the Dry Areas (ICARDA), one of the leading research organizations, and commissioned by CAREC as part of the currently implemented regional project under the auspices of EC IFAS “Climate Adaptation and Mitigation Program for Aral Sea Basin” (CAMP4ASB) financed by the World Bank.

The interactive Central Asia Climate Information Platform is the first in the region to launch new technologies capable of combining and disseminating a wealth of information, knowledge and experience for the benefit of countries that jointly solve climate problems.

The representative of the development organization, Akmal Akramkhanov, ICARDA Regional Coordinator for Central Asia and the Caucasus, presented the architecture, components, current functionality, structure and basic principles of the platform. He stressed that the data provided by the Platform could be widely used for scientific purposes.

GIS-specialist of the project CAMP4ASB, Elizaveta Khazieva, demonstrated to the participants the capabilities and functionality of the geoportal on the example of the Tuyamoun hydroelectric dam. Geoportal collects, manages and displays geospatial data and allows select types of analytics. A Geoportal is an interactive tool for searching, composing and publishing maps and layers. Users can query the spatial data and the information linked to the geographical features, select different layers, overlap information and more.

CACIP also provides a series of free online courses on climate change in Central Asia and the world.

The participants of the event expressed deep interest and willingness to cooperate and unanimously noted that the Platform affords a unique opportunity to expand knowledge. Over 140 persons attended the Launch Ceremony.
